Africa Regional:
Technologies for Low Carbon Development
Ref: NDF C37
EUR 0.5 million
Project period: 2012-2014
Partner agency: World Bank
Objectives
The objectives of this study are the following:
1) Collect and systematize the existing knowledge on technologies that can support Africa’s development while reducing energy-related, and land-based emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs).
2) Analyze in further detail the emission reduction potential of selected technologies, with an emphasis on those that appear more promising (in technical, institutional and financial terms).
3) Evaluate the viability in the context of Africa of both conventional and innovative financing instruments to support the deployment of low carbon technologies.
The study will review the current status of knowledge on the technical potential, at the regional level, of wind, solar (CSP) and geothermal energy. Based on a critical assessment of key knowledge gaps, it will then analyze in further detail the potential for rapid deployment of these technologies in a sub-set of countries, to be selected in a way that could maximize the transferability of methodologies to other countries.
Financing
Total cost of the project will be EUR 1.1 million, of which NDF will provide EUR 0.5 million, and World Bank EUR 0.6 million.
