NDF and the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF, part of the Inter-American Development Bank Group) and other counterparts are financing the project that is the first of its kind in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The project aims to introduce and develop a commercially viable biogas market that will improve the incomes, livelihoods and quality of life of rural farmers and their families in Nicaragua.

The market entry point will be the local dairy sector and the objectives will be achieved through promoting biogas technology, disseminating information, building capacities and developing and supporting businesses.

The project makes Nicaragua the first country in the region with a national biogas programme and it is expected that the project will be a significant source of knowledge and learning. The lessons learned can be replicated not only in other sectors in Nicaragua, but in other countries throughout the region as well.
