Today marked the official launch of the project: Resilience of the Blue Economy and the Coastal Ecosystem in Northern Honduras—MIPESCA

Tegucigalpa 1 November 2016.

An official event today marked the beginning of the implementation of the project "Resilience of the Blue Economy and Coastal Ecosystem Northern Honduras-MiPesca" which will seek to develop the fisheries value chain for small-scale fishing communities at the Atlantic coast of Honduras.

Co-financed by the Nordic Development Fund (NDF) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) through the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF), MiPesca will be implemented by the Irish international NGO, GOAL in the departments of Cortes, Atlantida, Colón and Gracias de Dios.

This project aims to improve the competitiveness of businesses and organisations of artisanal fisheries, while preserving the mangrove ecosystem upon which their economy depends and at the same time increase their resilience to changing climate.

Moreover, MiPesca seeks to carry out actions to link artisanal fishermen with higher value markets, and improve the regulatory framework for artisanal fisheries. The project will support indigenous territorial governance of natural resources, promote mangrove conservation and sustainable use as a strategy for ecosystem sustainability, adaptation and mitigation of climate change. Finally, the project will work on leveraging additional international climate change funds.

The launch event was attended by representatives of the Government of Honduras, NDF, IDB, MIF, GOAL, indigenous organizations, and private sector companies.
