NDF presents its experiences on urban resilience in an international seminar in Spain.

The Nordic Development Fund (NDF) supports a number of projects that addresses climate change challenges in an urban context. Using examples from projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America, NDF Country Program Manager Aage Jorgensen provided some early lessons learned regarding support to urban adaptation and resilience. The presentation was part of the concluding session in the international event Urban Sustainability: Models for Better Management and Planning, which took place between 28 July and 1 August 2014 in Santander, Spain.

The seminar course was arranged by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in collaboration with the Menéndez Pelayo International University and the city of Santander. The event, which had more than 200 participants, is part of the Emerging and Sustainable Cities Initiative (ESCI). This initiative assists emerging cities in dealing with the challenges of rapid urbanization and climate change while making the city environmentally, urban and fiscally sustainable. Currently 30 cities form part of ESCI and it's planned that by the end of 2015 there will be 50 Latin-American cities participating in the initiative. NDF supports ESCI and IDB invited NDF to present our experiences.

More than 50 international experts including researchers, development professionals, city planners, mayors and private sector representatives contributed to the event which covered the following thematic areas: 1) ESCI model for urban sustainability planning, 2) environmental sustainability and climate change, 3) urban sustainability, mobility, planning and smart cities, 4) fiscal sustainability and governance, and 5) international experiences and best practices.
