Climate Resilient Rural Water Supply and Sanitation
Ref: NDF C76

EUR 2.25 million
Project period: 2015-2018
Partner agency: African Development Bank (AfDB)

Objectives

NDF contributes to the National Water and Sanitation Programme which comprises four main components: (1) Water Supply Infrastructure Development; (2) Sanitation and Hygiene; (3) Sector Development and (4) Programme Management. NDF supports the first component through the following sub-components:

  • Capacity and tools development for integrating climate change adaptation measures for rural water supply and  sanitation using latest science and best practice

  • Field testing climate resilient approaches and methods to be used in National Water and Sanitation Programme

  • Dissemination of results and integration of results into the National Water Supply and sanitation Policy.

NDF's support will demonstrate and document how rural water and sanitation installations can be made more climate-resilient. The future sector interventions and initiatives will benefit from new and/or site-tested techniques for delivering services to the sector in a climate-resilient manner.

NDF support consists mainly of technical assistance. The duration of the NDF component will be 36 months and the existing project management unit for the National Water and Sanitation Program in the Ministry of Local Government and Housing will also be responsible for the NDF component. Through the National Water and Sanitation Program, AfDB plans to scale up the approaches and methods developed by the NDF component, once they have been thoroughly tested and documented.

Financing

NDF’s support is EUR 2.25 million. Total cost of the National Water and Sanitation Programme is EUR 36.08 million. The NDF funding will be provided as parallel co-financing. Procurement will be advertised internationally, in Zambia and on the NDF website and procurement opportunities will be open for the global business community.
