Objectives

To assist East Africa Rift Valley States (EARS) countries in completing the exploratory phase of geothermal development. The EARS comprises 13 countries: Burundi, Comoros, Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. NDF financing will focus on NDF partner countries. The Geothermal Exploration Project is the initial phase of the Geothermal Compact partnership program, initiated jointly by ICEIDA and the World Bank. It comprises nine stages: 1: Gathering of existing data/ Reconnaissance; 2: Exploration; 3: Exploration drilling of 1-3 wells; 4: Prefeasibility report; 5: Further drilling of wells; 6: Feasibility report; 7: Concept design and tender documents; 8: Detail design and construction; and 9: Testing, training and operations start-up. ICEIDA will finance stage 1. NDF will together with ICEIDA finance stage 2 and, if there is funding remaining stages 4 and 6. Stage 2, exploration, consists of geological, geothermal and structural mapping, chemical analyses of geothermal springs, and geophysical investigations.

Financing

The total project cost is EUR 10 million (approx. USD 12 million). NDF’s share is EUR 5 million and ICEIDA’s share is EUR 5 million.
